After a lifetime of living,
working, and raising a family in Western North Carolina Senator Snow
understands the people of the mountains. His work as both a
prosecutor and a judge gives him a firsthand view of the lives and
conditions of mountain people. In the court room he saw that the
underlying reasons for many of the cases he heard had as much to do
with a lack of jobs in the mountains as it did the difference
between people. No other profession could better show him the larger
reasons – a lack of state investment in Western North Carolina – for
many of the cases he heard.
From the bench Senator Snow
took a special interest in children’s cases and Juvenile Court. His
guiding light in these cases was to do what was in the best interest
of the child. In making and voting on policy in the NC Senate he
still follows the same credo. Senator Snow understands that children
are a blessing and need to be cherished and protected against
corrupting influences.
Protecting Children Senator Snow
led the way in the NC Senate by writing and passing legislation to
protect our families and children from sexual offenders. Working
with the Department of Corrections he helped develop a program that
will put GPS monitoring devices on the most dangerous sexual
offenders. Police will now know the exact location of these sexual
offenders twenty four hours a day.
Additionally Senator Snow is
a sponsor of Jessica’s Law. Named for nine year old Jessica
Lunsford, who was brutally raped and killed by a released child
molester, this bill will provide local law enforcement the tools it
needs to monitor released sexual predators who live in our
communities and let parents know of their presence.
Senator Snow worked to pass
legislation that provides law enforcement the capability to
prosecute people who solicit sex from children over the internet.
Senator Snow, after raising
four children of his own, and seeing his three grandchildren
grow-up, understands that our laws need to protect children from
people who want to abuse them.
Faith and the Family In Western
North Carolina we have a proud heritage of living, learning, and
respecting one another. We believe that life is sacred and our laws
need to reflect that we respect this fundamental belief.
Senator Snow's faith and
church have always been an important part of his life and his
family’s heritage. His grandfather, James Abner Snow, was a Southern
Baptist Minister who served churches in the Piedmont section of
North Carolina. His aunt, Laura Frances Snow Lagos, was a Southern
Baptist Missionary in Chile for 40 years.
As a teenager he became a
member of the Murphy First United Methodist Church. Senator Snow and
Sheila have been active members and raised our family in this
church. Through the years they have worked in many service areas in
the church including the chancel choir, the Stewardship Program and
Youth Counselors with Alpha, a touring youth choir.
Senator Snow has said time
and time again that, "My commitment to Christ is unwavering and I
strive each day to live in His example and serve others as a
Christian disciple. I pray each day for His guidance and
wisdom".
